The term plastic surgery can have a negative connotation but should not. While breast augmentation and other aesthetic procedures come to mind, the majority of plastic surgery has to do with correction or restoration of form and function. While health concerns about the procedure at one time were valid, it is a standard medical treatment today and goes far beyond aesthetic enhancement.
We live in a society that applauds and embraces second chances. When somebody makes a mistake, assuming he is willing to admit that he made an error, and deal with the consequences, we usually support giving the person a second opportunity. In many cases involving plastic surgery, no mistake was made.
People get in car accidents, are born with deformities, and suffer injuries. Why should they live their lives without the looks that they want? Overcoming whatever obstacles life throws your way is a lot of what a person's character is made up of. How you accomplish the goal of getting over a problem, whether it's real or perceived, doesn't really matter.
There tend to be three different techniques when a patient decides to go under the knife and all of them involve skin grafting, the idea is that you transfer skin tissue to the area of the surgery. Autografts take a patients skin from one part of his or her body and move it to the surgical area. Allografts take skin from another person and use it on the patient. Xenografts take skin from a different species.
One of the biggest needs for plastic surgery comes from victims of burns and traumatic injuries to the face. These injuries could also have been sustained through infection, disease, or developmental abnormalities. These are all patients that want to live without major scars.
Breast reduction is not talked about a lot, but is another popular procedure that can have substantial health benefits particularly for women with bad backs.
And for those who choose plastic surgery to enhance their look, what is the problem? We live in a world where everybody has the right to decide on their religion, occupation, area that they live in, and who their friends are. Why can't I decide to change the look of my body? Makeup is fine, clothing varies is size, shape, quality, and color. Naturally my body is different than yours, and by going to the gym I can change that body. What is the problem with enhancing the body via a medical procedure? It is legal, safe, and a personal decision. Whatever your reason, whether it be second chance, or desire to look different, using a doctor to change your appearance is acceptable in every way.
